Sol Goes Home - Soylent Green

Sci-Fi Scenes: Sol Goes Home, Soylent Green, 1973

Thorne’s book, Sol, makes a terrible discovery . . . and by now I hope everyone on the planet knows what it is.  Yes, the overpopulated, polluted, and globally toasty Earthers are eating the dead to survive.  Sol decides to throw in the towel and euthanize himself, telling Thorne the secret in the process and using his dead husk as bait to get Thorne to dig deeper.

At the time Edward G. Robinson was secretly dying of cancer.  He broke the news to Charlton Heston just before this scene was filmed.  Crafty bastard.  He died twelve days later.

This scene is both haunting and touching in the context of the movie and Robinson’s failing health . . . and it has stuck with me since I was a kid.

What is a Sci-Fi Scene? These scenes are memorable because they touch the soul, show amazing visions of the future, or broke ground in film technology. All these scenes are so great that they are in no particular order, just the order that they come to me. Enjoy!
