There may be some confusion surrounding this one.  Many casual fans of Star Wars initially believed (and some perhaps still do) this is Episode VIII, the sequel to The Force Awakens.  “A Star Wars Story” denotes interstitial and stand alone movies within the canon (outside the episodic Star Wars which is focused on the Skywalker family story).  This is not a third Death Star as so many people lamented when the first trailer dropped.  In this case, it’s the original Death Star!  Rogue One takes place just before Episode IV – A New Hope and tells the story of the mission to secure the original Death Star plans so they can be secreted away to Princess Leia aboard the Tantive IV and delivered to the Rebel Alliance.  This Star Wars film looks much darker than previous tales, and appears to approach storytelling from a military point of view showing the struggles between the Empire and Rebellion.  Just to keep you excited there’s a Han Solo Star Wars Story film in development that’s tentatively scheduled for May 25, 2018.

Here’s the official synopsis:

[box type=”download” align=”” class=”” width=””]From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016.[/box]

The Hype: It’s Star Wars.

The Caution:  It’s not part of the Skywalker story-line.  This may be confusing and off putting to generations of Star Wars fans who have little interest in backstories.  This is a gamble Disney is taking in an attempt to keep the franchise in theaters every year for the foreseeable future.
