Superman has been an American staple since he first appeared in a 1938 issue of Action Comics. Since then he has appeared in a myriad of print, television and silver sceen incarnations. Man of Steel is the 3rd modern reboot of the character which started with Christopher Reeve back in 1978. Outside the modern era Superman has only appeared in one other theatrical movie…1951’s forgettable Superman and the Mole-Men. And boy has Kal-El come a long way!
The 2013 version of Superman carries a more modern title, harkening back to one of his monikers attached from his comic book roots…”Man of Steel.” This new version promises (at least from the trailers) to be more character driven, moody and dark. A departure from the somewhat campy 1978 reboot as well as from the emotionless character portrayed by the equally emotionless Brandon Routh in 2006’s semi-disappointing Superman Returns.
Man of Steel is being helmed by Zack Snyder (300 & Watchmen) and produced by Christopher Nolan (Dark Knight series & Inception). Christopher Nolan also had a hand in the writing and is sure to inject some much needed drama and character depth in to this series. General Zod is back to confront Kal-El/Clark Kent, but Clark struggles with his powers and destiny (the common superhero trope “with great power comes great responsibility”) during humanity’s most critical time of need.
Let’s hope that the series doesn’t go down a road that leads to the equivalent of Supergirl and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace!
Man of Steel is slated for release on June 14, 2013 in North America.
