Doctor Strange is Disney’s latest offering from the Marvel Universe. In it, Stephen Strange, one of the world’s top neurosurgeons, is injured in a car accident that derails his career. He sets out on a journey of healing, where he encounters the “Ancient One,” who later becomes Strange’s mentor in the mystic arts. Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange in what appears to be a reality bending, Inception-like foray into Marvel territory. I don’t expect it to burn up the box office like many Disney/Marvel movies, but it should do quite handsomely and be a good way to spend a couple hours on a cold November day.
Here’s the official synopsis:
[box type=”download” align=”” class=”” width=””]From Marvel Studios comes Doctor Strange, the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place—a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange—armed with newly acquired magical powers—is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.[/box]
The Hype: Benedict Cumberbatch for one. He looks to be the perfect choice to play Doctor Strange, and also brings acting chops and his epic voice to the role. Originality in the form of a different type of superhero story is another positive. This may help alleviate some of the caution listed below.
The Caution: Are people becoming jaded with comic/superhero movies? I’ll be honest. From my perspective, certainly, but the mileage of other fans will likely vary. But I’ve heard rumblings of it permeating social networks on the internet. Doctor Strange falls outside the normal Marvel safe zone of Iron Man, Avengers, and Thor that fans are used to. But it worked for Guardians of the Galaxy and it very well may work here.
