Ghost in the Shell Super Bowl Trailer

Dreamworks is developing a live action version of Oshii Mamoru‘s classic and masterful anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow‘s original manga . . . Ghost in the Shell.  The title is a reference to housing a “soul” or “intelligence” within an artificial, cybernetic shell.  What is the interpretation of human versus machine in this setting?

Most nerds probably know the live action version was in development, but the production has been mired down in controversy concerning “whitewashing” of the story by casting Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic law enforcement specialist working in a near future Japan of 2029 (the original manga was written in 1989).

Ghost in the Shell is slate for release on March 31, 2017
