Let’s get started . . .
Read our full Arrival review HERE.
Arrival snuck up on me out of nowhere, and it looks very compelling. It’s based on the novella Story of Your Life by author Ted Chiang, and won a Nebula award in 2000. Dr. Louise Banks is enlisted by the military to communicate with a race of newly arrived aliens in a first contact situation. But this story looks to be less about invasion and more about understanding between two alien races, and xenophobia within our own race. Initial buzz for the movie is extremely positive, including website io9 calling it a “scifi masterpiece.” Keep in mind that it’s io9, and as everyone knows io9 has never resorted to hyperbolic language to garners clicks . . . right? You be the judge.
Here’s the official synopsis:
The Hype: Aliens. Yep, aliens are always a reason to see a science fiction movie, especially aliens that appear to be as unique as the ones in this movie. Arrival looks to exude intelligence and drama while leaving typical alien invasion themes, seen in movies like Independence Day, far behind.
The Caution: Arrival has a fairly low budget for a science fiction movie ($50 million) so it’s relying heavily on writing, story, and characters. Three things often replaced in this genre by the smoke and mirrors of special effects.
