Update: I’m saddens me to pass on that Francis Tsai passed away on April 23, 2015.
Francis Tsai was born in Hawaii and has both Taiwanese and Japanese ancestry. He studied and received a degree in architecture before turning to art.
He has worked for game development studios as well as a free lancer. He’s worked with Presto Studios, High Moon Studios, Wizards of the Coast, Marvel Comics, and ImagineFX magazine. His artwork has been feature in various video games, comic books, graphic novels, games (Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons), as well as the TV and film industries.
In 2010, Tsai was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The disease took his ability to move his arms and hands and hasn’t held a pencil since early 2011. He discovered he could digitally paint on his iPhone with his right big toe while holding the iPhone with his left foot. Once he lost ability to move his feet, Tsai began using the PC Eye from Tobii in conjunction with a Kiosk Tablet to communicate. By early 2012, Tsai began creating art again using the eye-gaze technology with drawing programs Sketchup and Photoshop. His eye-gaze art has been featured in the media including CNN and computer art magazine ImagineFX (August 2013).
Tsai continues to create art using eye-gaze technology from Tobii and uses proceeds from art sales to cover care costs.
