Superman has been an American staple since he first appeared in a 1938 issue of Action Comics. Since then he has appeared in a myriad of print, television and silver sceen incarnations. Man of Steel is the 3rd modern reboot of the character which started with Christopher Reeve back in 1978. Outside the modern era Superman has only appeared in one other theatrical movie...1951's forgettable Superman and the Mole-Men. And boy has Kal-El come a long way!
