The Hobbit Featurette: Beorn’s House

There’s a new Desolation of Smaug featurette out that gives us a behind the scenes look at Beorn’s house. Okay, the featurette isn’t hot off the presses new, but I just happened upon it and thought I would share.

If you’ve read the book you know that Beorn, while not being a true ‘giant,’ is very large. The scale of this home in this featurette clearly shows that Beorn towers well over even Gandalf. Unfortunately we don’t get to actually see Beorn in this clip, but I can only imagine how huge he must be when he shapeshifts in to a bear.  Here’s a poster to give you an idea, though to me shapeshifted Beorn actually look too small in this image.

That being said, the entire set is of a practical nature, with clearly a lot of love and skill poured in to it.  It’s good to see full sets being used among all the CGI shenanigans that Peter Jackson is injecting in to this new trilogy.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens December 13, 2013 (USA).
