Sci-Fi Scenes: Opening Sequence, Star Wars, 1977

When Star Wars opened in May of 1977 no one really knew what to expect.  There was no internet.  There was no Youtube.  There were no forums with people endlessly speculating and posting spoilers to the length that the entire movie is nearly laid out before it’s even released.

I was there, as a child, sitting in a dark theater reading the scrolling text, watching it fade to black . . . and then being witness to one of the most epic and amazing opening movie sequences in science fiction cinema history.  Now the scene seems mundane.  Amazing special effects are every day.  Epic movies are run of the mill.  But in May of 1977 every theater in America let out a collective gasp every time the Rebel Blockade Runner streaked across the backdrop of Tatooine chased by a never ending Star Destroyer.

Star Wars, and this sequence, changed summer movies forever.

What is a Sci-Fi Scene? These scenes are memorable because they touch the soul, show amazing visions of the future, or broke ground in film technology. All these scenes are so great that they are in no particular order, just the order that they come to me. Enjoy!
